ec1 Elvis Costello readies limited edition Spectacular Spinning Songbook box set

This past spring, rock and roll journeyman Elvis Costello pulled “The Spectacular Spinning Songbook” out of retirement. Created back in 1986, the concept takes the power out of Costello’s hands and places it into the fans, letting them spin a wheel and dictate the setlist to create a unique musical event each and every gig. Now, as SlicingUpEyeballs points out, Universal Music Enterprises will look to commemorate Costello’s recent venture with the release of a new box set titled Elvis Costello & The Imposters: The Return of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook!!!  And, yes, the three exclamation points are part of the title.

Limited to just 1,500 copies, the set will feature a CD, DVD, and 10-inch vinyl EP of material from Costello’s two-night stint at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on May 11th and 12th, 2011. The CD is comprised of 16 tracks from both nights, the 10″ features four live cuts, and the DVD packs footage of the entire second night, including a special appearance from The Bangles. In addition to the music, the box set contains a 40-page hardcover book of photos, a diary from Costello detailing each gig, a 20″ x 30″ concert tour poster, and a limited edition postcard. And since no collection would be complete without it, the box set’s front features a replica spinning wheel to play with at your discretion. Check out the entrire tracklist below.

Elvis Costello & The Imposters: The Return of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook!!! is in stores December 6th via Universal Music Enterprises. Universal also has plans to release single- and double-CD versions of the set sometime next year, so stay tuned for more.
