Don’t you just loathe when drunks abuse the karaoke machine on weeknights? Depending on the neighborhood, you just might hear four to five variations on Morrissey. That’s enough to drive you to Advil. That’s why we leave it to the professionals to bring justice to a Smiths cover – and, by golly, there are plenty. On December 13th, fans of the English legends can dive into Please, Please, Please: A Tribute to the Smiths, a 20-track compilation sporting Smiths covers from some of indie music’s finest, all placing shame on Joe Jukebox, who butchers “How Soon Is Now?” on a weekly basis.

Telekinesis punches out “Sheila Take A Bow”, Girl in a Coma takes a crack at “Rubber Ring”, Sixpence the Richer reminds us they’re still kicking with “I Won’t Share You”, Vivian Girls’ Katy Goodman tells us “What She Said”, and Built to Spill’s Doug Martsch sings on “Reel Around the Fountain”. As Slicing Up Eyeballs reports, the effort’s label, American Laundromat, will also issue a bonus 7″ featuring covers by Stars, C’est la Mort, and The Caulfield Sisters. Consult the complete tracklist below for more information.

Currently, American Laundromat is accepting pre-orders, offering incentives in several bundle packages. These include a CD with a one-inch button; a CD with the aforementioned 7″, a pin, and an exclusive download of extra tracks; and a special deluxe version that combines the previous with a T-shirt and a sneak peek into the album ahead of its release. Choose wisely.

Please, Please, Please: A Tribute to the Smiths hits stores December 13th (via American Laundromat). To see how the pros channel Moz, check out Stars’ cover of “Asleep” below.
