North London-based singer-songwriter Elena Tonra (aka Daughter) creates gorgeous music that is stuck in limbo between personal singer-songwriter confessions and bombastic swells of slick indie rock. Perhaps, then, there’s no better place for Tonra (alongside the rest of her live band) to play than a church, where intimacy and theatrical showmanship tango every Sunday.
Taken from a December 8th show at London’s St. Giles in the Fields Church, the video for “Youth” is the very definition of Daughter’s musical struggle, sounding simultaneously lost in the church’s grand halls and yet overpowering to the point that it seems like it might knock down each and every column. Add in some Gothic-y black-and-white footage, and the experience is one that is as uplifting and frightening as any sermon ever could be. Check out the clip below, or head over to Cluster 1.
Daughter’s latest EP, The Wild Youth, is out now.
