r e m Video: Very early R.E.M. performance from Chronic Town era

Here’s a time warp: Coinciding with Michael Stipe’s birthday today, a very early taped performance of R.E.M. has hit the web. How early? This one dates back to October 10, 1982. As Slicing Up Eyeballs points out, the band’s gig at Raleigh, N.C.’s The Pier was originally broadcast for local television, which likely makes it the band’s earliest professionally filmed set. Given the time frame – roughly two months after the band released its debut EP, Chronic Town – the setlist sports a lush, nostalgic multitude of tracks, including their breakthrough hit “Radio Free Europe” and an unreleased jam titled “Skank”. Check out the partial setlist below, and if you have the time, peep the full 46 minute clip below. Welcome to life post-R.E.M., folks.
