Given the previous revelation that review copies of Spiritualized’s new album were sent prior to its completion, we know mastermind Jason Pierce has no problem swaying from the norm. This might help explain the image above (which is actually the artwork), or the fact that the LP features a co-writing credit for his 11-year-old daughter, as Pitchfork reports.
Despite the erratic behind-the-scenes work, our first listen into Sweet Heart Sweet Light sounds quite focused. Pierce’s vocals remain direct and center, comfortably floating above soulful, jangly Britpop. All of the stage-crushing psychedelia that made 2008’s Songs in A&E such an expansive record soars and dives over the track’s eight minutes – yes, eight minutes. Hey, The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” spanned seven minutes, perhaps Pierce has just as much to say to Jane. Check it out below.
Sweet Heart Sweet Light arrives April 17th via Fat Possum.
