Early last year, GZA halted work on Liquid Swords 2: The Return of the Shadowboxer to begin work on an audio-visual project that would be in a league of its own. Whether his upcoming seventh solo LP, Dark Matter, is that very same project, it’s definitely not of this world. Due for release sometime this year, the LP is an exploration of GZA’s lifelong interest with various academic fields, particularly astronomy and quantum physics.
“I will take a quantum leap and discuss the universe while taking us on a journey through deep space. Traveling at lightspeed from the galactic center of one galaxy to the farthest corners of another. I hope my listeners will enjoy this cosmic adventure within a world of colossal planets, gas giants, meteorites, comets, and asteroids in the most extreme conditions.” No word yet on any further album details, so stay tuned for more.
GZA’s academic aspirations continue later this month when he’s involved in another series of rap lectures at MIT, NYU, and Cornell. Then, if his spring schedule couldn’t be any more bizarre, he’ll play select shows with eight-piece Latin supergroup Grupo Fantasma and punk icons Bad Brains. Peep his full lecture and performance schedule below.
