Knitting Factory Records has announced the May 8th release of a new live album from the late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti. Entitled Live In Detroit, 1986, the release marks the first new material from Kuti since his final studio album, 1992’s Underground System, according to an issued press release.
As the title suggests, the recording is taken from a November 1986 concert at Detroit’s Fox Theater, just months after Kuti was released from a Nigerian prison on shady “currency trafficking” charges. Backed by his newly formed Egypt 80 band, Fela played then-unreleased tracks like “Just Like That”, “Confusion Break Bones”, and “Beasts Of No Nation”.
