A new musical based on The Flaming Lips 2002 record Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is set to debut at San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse this November or December, the Los Angeles Times reports. In production since 2007, the show is written and directed by Des MacAnuff (Broadway’s Jersey Boys, The Who’s Tommy).
Though taking its name from the eponymous album, Yoshimi will also include music from The Soft Bulletin and At War with the Mystics. In addition, the production is said to employ “multimedia stage effects”. Writer Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) was involved early on, but left when the musical became a “sung through” affair.
Lips frontman Wayne Coyne spoke about the show to Billboard last April, calling it “hokey and wonderful and poignant and powerful.” He also said it would feature close to 30 songs. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots enters rehearsal in mid-September.
