New Jersey tends to get a bad rap as a place to live. As a source for music, however, it’s a well-known bastion of quality (see: Bruce Springsteen, The Fugees, The Gaslight Anthem). Last year, the four gents of The Static Jacks contributed their first full-length, If You’re Young, to the Garden State’s musical canon. The album is an energetic blend of garage and indie sounds; it has all the fire of punk, with the polish and movability of poppier rock. With their new EP, Spray Tan (well, they are from Jersey), The Static Jacks have readied another group of songs to do their home state proud.
To record Spray Tan, the band borrowed a converted storage space in Jersey City from a friend and enlisted the production talents of Andrew Maury, who added his own touch by incorporating everything from passing trains to power drills. Though the band didn’t have a solidified plan upon entering the studio, the EP’s first single, “Young Guns”, is proof that things turned out more than fine. Full of ringing, glowing guitar work and galvanic drumming, there’s a hint of fellow Jersey punks Titus Andronicous, especially in the final verse. Below, check out the video for the song, featuring found footage of children dressed for Halloween and hashing out sibling rivalries in the ring.
Full details for Spray Tan are still forthcoming. You can get a preview of the EP’s tracks by checking out The Static Jacks at one of their upcoming tour stops, available below.
