As previously reported, electronic auteur Nicolas Jaar recently released a pseudo-mini MP3 player dubbed The Prism. Among the 12-songs included is a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Avalanche” with Steven Spielberg’s daughter Sasha — whom you may recognize from Jaar’s live performances — under the moniker Just Friends. (The man knows how to pick celebrity leading ladies, apparently.) As Pretty Much Amazing points out, the track is now available online, and you can stream it below.
For this version, Jaar elevated the original’s threatening minimalism to whole new levels. He opens the track with a creaking door that ushers in the ghost of a synthpad, which beats in time with sparse piano chords and a sampled, staggered breath before Spielberg’s voice kicks in. Jaar’s spacious arrangements give her jazzy intonations room to breathe, filling the six minutes with sweet nothings that sound like they’re inside your own ear.
The Prism is now available for $40 via clown and sunset.
