As previously reported, The Mountain Goats will drop album #14, Transcendental Youth, on October 2nd via Merge Records. We’ve already seen the band perform several of the new tracks in concert, but today, they’ve unleashed the studio version of the album’s lead single, “Cry for Judas”. The track is streaming below, and available for purchase via iTunes.
The Mountain Goats mastermind John Darnielle says of the track, “Like a lot of the new album, this song is about saddling up your demons and learning to ride them like devil horses with big leathery wings. To the best of my knowledge, it’s also the first song ever to feature both a swinging horn section and a line about a baphomet drawn in chalk on an altar cloth, so everybody else who was trying to square that circle can take a breather now.”
The Mountain Goats are also now accepting pre-orders for Transcendental Youth, and the first 1,000 transactions will receive a limited edition 7″ single containing two new, non-album tracks: “Steal Smoked Fish” b/w “In the Shadow of the Western Hills”. According to a press release, both songs were previously debuted by Darnielle solo, were recorded by Brandon Eggleston at Cloud City in Portland, and were tracked directly to 1/2″ tape without overdubs. Darnielle describes the single as “the end-point of a truly live all-analog chain that was never converted at any point to ones and zeroes.” That being said, digital versions of the tracks will be available in the future.
