Louisville’s resident psychedelic synth-pop band The Pass will return with this year with their sophomore LP. Completed over the span of two years and mixed by Alex Aldi (Passion Pit, The Walkmen), Melt is a “culmination of taking a lot of our goals when we started our band and combining it with all the things we learned being together for two and a half years,” says bassist Will Roberts.

The larger aim, Roberts adds, was to present an album that was danceable without limiting themselves emotionally. “Ultimately, our goal was still to make a fun album but also reach new levels of emotion…..nostalgia and intrigue, longing and desire, complacency or heartbrokenness. Some songs have a bit darker or experimental sound than our previous album, while others would be very at home at a disco.”

And speaking of dance clubs, the album’s lead single, “Without Warning”, was “musically intended to shake your money maker.” At its core, the dance floor-ready anthem is a modern take on the energetic and evocative funk and R&B of the ’70s, with various New Wave-inspired synths in the place of jangling guitars and bass slaps. Lyrically, the aforementioned darker elements are at play, with the band simultaneously celebrating and condemning a charismatic character in their life (“You’re cosmopolitan/Turning everyone into citizens of the world in which you live in/You’re making the movements everyone follows/You’re calculated, you only take what you can handle”). Stream it below.

The band will be on tour throughout the summer and fall, and you can check out the full schedule just below.
