earlimartlpcover Earlimart announces new album: System Preferences

After a four-year hiatus, Los Angles indie-rock duo Earlimart will return with their seventh studio album, System Preferences, out digitally on September 18th and physically on October 16th via their own label The Ship. According to a press release, the 12-track album is a “lush and lovely soundtrack for a sad, beautiful world”, focusing on the concepts of “disillusionment with and the acceptance of technology, complex relationships, and lost weekends.”

The LP sees the pair (Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray) “retain tones and textures familiar to fans of the band’s six previous albums of whispering and stomping indie rock” while demonstrating growth as songwriters since 2008’s Hymn and Her.

As for where the duo are at now, they’ve unveiled the lead single, “97 Heart Attack”. Despite random tweaks and effects, it’s the group’s signature slowcore, lead by the chug of an oversized acoustic guitar and hollowed-out bass drum. The silver lining is Espinoza and Murray trading off vocals, seemingly revealing their mutual romantic exhaustion like some twisted version of a Kenny Rogers-Dolly Parton duet. Despite the break, the duo have been busy making music, collaborating with members of Grandaddy for the 2010 release of Admiral Radley’s I Heart California and its subsequent touring. And speaking of Grandaddy, the pair will play with them on August 13th in Los Angeles. Check out their full schedule following the tracklist.
