In early 2010, citing a changing music industry, Toronto rapper k-os proclaimed he was done making albums and instead planned to drop one single at a time ala the Smashing Pumpkins. Until now, he’s been a man of his word, releasing the Anchorman mixtape in August 2010, followed by intermittent demos on his Facebook page. In recent months, though, the MC has changed his tune, and now plans on releasing a new album called BLack On BLonde on November 27th.
In a behind-the scenes video documenting the album’s recording process, k-os talked about his experimentation with “rap and roll, mixing hip-hop with rock and roll music.” It’s just such a patchwork approach that yielded the project’s lead single, “The Dog Is Mine”. Backed by a Black Keys-esque fuzzy guitar and stomping drums that repeat with hip-hop steadiness, k-os eschews rhymes for singing, letting loose a tale of the tragic aftermath of a relationship’s end (“Gotta pack your things and go/Move fast not slow/The dog is mine”). Stream it below (via Some Kind of Awesome).
k-os has released other cuts and demos this past year, but many have been removed from his YouTube account or Facebook page. For now, be sure to check out “Superbad!” and a preview of a dubby number featuring a vocal sample from Metric’s Emily Haines.
