With NYC’s glowing waterfront as a backdrop, The Mountain Goats frontman John Darnielle recently debuted the Transcendental Youth track “Harlem Roulette” on Pitchfork TV. Darnielle said the song was born out of his fascination with Frankie Lymon, the lead singer of The Teenagers (best known for 1956’s “Why Do Fools Fall in Love”) who died at the age of 25. Watch Darnielle’s performance of the high-energy folk tune below.

Transcendental Youth hits stores on October 2nd via Merge Records. The lead single, “Cry for Judas”, is streaming here.
