Earlier this month, Questlove paid tribute to longtime friend and collaborator J. Dilla with a 60-minute DJ set for the Boiler Room. A full recording of the performance was recently upload on YouTube and you can watch it below.
Awesomely enough, Questlove posted a few anecdotes in the comments section of the video, explaining that the opening track “was the first beat i made w/ dilla for the things fall apart album. but we went with dynamite instead. after he died i went to rework the beat.” He said of the track at the 11-minute mark, “one of dilla’s tracks flipping ‘grease’ ‘is’ ‘the’ ‘word’ on his beat tapes.”
In related news, a new 7″ box set containing Dilla’s 2006 album Donuts is slated for a January release.
