c676d5b1 Johnny Depp taps Tom Waits, Keith Richards, Michael Stipe for pirate song compilation

Back in 2006, fresh off of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, actor/believable pirate Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski, and producer Hal Willner rounded up the likes of Lou Reed, Nick Cave, and Bono for Rogue’s Gallery, a collection of modernized “pirate ballads, sea songs, and chanteys.” Now, with nary a pirate movie in sight, the Hollywood heavyweights are readying to set sail again, having organized an equally star-studded follow-up entitled Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys.

The two-disc, 36-track collection features collaborative efforts between Tom Waits and Keith Richards, Patti Smith and Depp, Courtney Love and Michael Stipe, and Iggy Pop and A Hawk and a Hacksaw, along with contributions from Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, Michael Gira of Swans, Broken Social Scene, Antony, Beth Orton, Big Freedia, thespians Tim Robbins and Anjelica Huston, and many, many more.

For a hardy taste of the pirate life, check out a video of the Pogues’ Shane MacGowan, Depp, and Verbinski reworking the 1885 super hit “Leaving of Liverpool” at
