Rolling Stone has posted new details on the forthcoming fifth studio album from Deerhunter. The followup to 2010’s excellent Halcyon Digest is being recorded at Brooklyn’s Rare Book Room Studio with producer Nicolas Vernhea.

Going into the studio, Bradford Cox “stockpiled upward of 250 potential songs for the new disc.” He’s since whittled down the tracklist to a “strong dozen”, which include the titles “Dream Captain” and “Pensacola”. Cox is recording with longtime guitarist Lockett Pundt, drummer Moses Archuleta, and new bassist Josh McKay, and their sessions often stretch to 6 AM.

Cox said he and Pundt listened to only The Ramones and Ricky Nelson prior to making the album, and also cited Pierre Schaeffer, Steve Reich, and Bo Diddley as major influences. In fact, Cox referred to Diddley as “the god of this record,” but added, “I don’t think there’s a single Bo Diddley beat on the album.”

Describing the still-in-progress album, Cox referred to it as “a very avant-garde rock & roll record.”
