Listen to two songs from Pavement’s first show ever

There were other early incarnations of Pavement in the ’80s, with various members being in bands like Bag O’ Bones, Ectoslavia, and Lake Speed  – but in Stockton in 1989, that’s when Steve Malkmus, Scott Kannberg, and Gary Young officially formed the outfit and recorded the Slay Tracks (1933-1969) EP in Young’s studio.

Sometime that year, the trio performed two of their earliest songs, “Home” and “Mellow Jazz Docent”, at KDVS radio station in Davis, CA, both of which would eventually be featured on their 1991 Perfect Sound Forever EP. Listen to how much influence the Swell Maps had on their early sound below.
