As previously reported, M83′s Anthony Gonzalez contributed his talents to the forthcoming Tom Cruise sci-fi vehicle, Oblivion. The post-apocalyptic film, which finds society living in the clouds and Morgan Freeman in leather, is exactly the sort of silver screen project that Gonzalez was born to work on. That much rings true with our first listen off the soundtrack: “StarWaves”.
Written alongside composer Joseph Trapanese (Tron: Uprising), “StarWaves” teleports Gonzalez’ to his early work with M83, specifically 2003’s Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts and 2005’s Before the Dawn Heals Us. It’s a moody bath of synths, likely heard best up high and with a breathtaking view — basically, where Cruise’s character might spend most of his time. Stream it below (via Rolling Stone).
Oblivion: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack hits stores on April 9th via Back Lot Records. In addition to Gonzalez and Trapanese’s score, there will be a new recording from M83, featuring Norwegian star Susanne Sundfør. The film itself will follow on April 19th.
