Among the many topics digi-pop balladeer Devon Welsh (aka Majical Cloudz) touches upon in his forthcoming Matador debut, Impersonator, family is a thread that’s appeared throughout his career. That trend continues in the music video for the recently-released “Childhood’s End”, which stars Welsh’s father Kenneth Welsh (aka the nefarious Windom Earle on Twin Peaks). Directed by long-time collaborator Emily Kai Bock, the black and white clip follows one man’s solitary existence before falling into some bizarre dream world. So, yeah, it’s pretty much an old episode of Twin Peaks, only loads more heartbreaking.
“I have been present at two of (Erica’s) other video shoots (for Grimes ‘Oblivion’ and Solar Years’ ‘Brotherhood’) so it was an unfortunate but ironic twist of fate that we were on tour during the filming of this video,” Devon Welsh said in a post on the band’s Tumblr. “As a result, some of the details of its production are a mystery to me, but it makes it all the more fascinating for me to watch. (My father’s) performance in the video is very moving and Im mostly just really happy to be able to collaborate with him in some way (this is not the first time he has collaborated with Majical Cloudz, as he played the flute and trumpet on two early recordings back in 2010). My sincere gratitude goes out to Emily, Bobby Shore and everyone else involved in the production. Its a truly cinematic video and we are honoured to have our song as the soundtrack.”
