Precious little is known about Brighton, UK’s GAPS. A pair of longtime friends going simply by Rachel and Ed hadn’t seen each other in years before reuniting in their hometown. She picked up a microphone, he turned on his laptop, and since February they’ve been sending ripples through the European blog-o-sphere. With the July 15th release of their official debut AA side single on Sexbeat, “Cascade” b/w “Keep You”, those ripples are looking to crest Stateside.
The first thing you hear on “Cascade” is seagulls. But GAPS don’t just use the birds as sound effects; they’re instruments. As the sitar-like acoustic guitar builds, the squawks start to pile on, creating a sense of panic even Hitchcock would be proud of. The sounds collapse into “Baba O’Riley”-esque synths, while Rachel coos from deep within your speakers, only to have the bird sounds return chopped and spliced till they sound like scratching vinyl. It’s a mystical tune that’s at once wondrous and a bit haunting, and you can check it out below.
The “Cascade” b/w “Keep You” single will be available on 7″ vinyl and digital download on July 15th.
