Last week, Jim James and My Morning Jacket lent a hand in launching the world hunger and social awareness program, Global Citizen Tickets Initiative, which allows fans to enter into lotteries for two donated tickets at participating artists’ shows for the next three years. It’s a cool idea and something that’s turned plenty of artists’ heads, including tUnE-yArDs’ Merrill Garbus, who submitted a remix of James’ splendid single, “A New Life”.
Garbus retains much of the original’s DNA, injecting her signature erratic percussion and a baggie of harmonies that feel cribbed from Tina Turner’s cover of “Proud Mary”, specifically the “doot doot doot doot” part. Stream over at Rolling Stone and be prepared to shake them hips, dude and dudettes.
Other artists involved in the Global Citizen Tickets Initiative include Kanye West, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Neil Young, and Beyoncé. To earn points, fans can share Facebook videos dealing with poverty, or by donating $20 or more online for a participating charity. For more information, visit the organization’s official website.
