As previously reported, Polaris/Miracle Legion frontman Mark Mulcahy returns with his first solo record in eight years, Dear Mark J. Mulcahy, I Love You, on June 18th via Fire Records/Mezzotint. Already we’ve heard the celebratory “She Makes the World Turn Backwards”, and now comes another track, “Let The Fireflies Fly Away”.
Moving away from his whimsical singer-songwriter persona ever so slightly, Mulcahy embraces the jangly indie pop of his former bands, layering his off-kilter croon over a saccharine guitar and steady drums while revealing plans to run away from the world. “Open up the jar and let the fireflies fly away,” he wails, making such an escape sound so deceptively easy. Listen in below (via The AV Club).
In support of the record, Mulcahy will be on tour this summer. Among the stops is July 25th’s intimate concert at Chicago’s The Hideout, presented by Consequence of Sound, which marks Mulcahy’s first performance in the city in nearly a decade. Tickets to the show are now available for just $12.
