This week, Secretly Canadian reissued Songs: Ohia’s first EP, 1997’s Hecla & Griper, in recognition of the album’s 15th anniversary. According to press for the release, this is just one of multiple projects the label was working on with Jason Molina before his passing back in March.
Available on vinyl for the first time ever, the reissue of Hecla & Griper features two previously unreleased Songs: Ohia cuts: “Debts” and “Pilot & Friend”. In addition, there are two alternate tracks that would later be included on Songs: Ohia’s 1998 sophomore album, Impala: “Hearts Newly Arrived” and “One of Those Uncertain Hands”, both listed here as being from the “Hecla Session”.
The EP is in stores now, or available through Secretly Canadian’s webstore.
In related news, a memorial concert has been announced in Molina’s honor for May 11th at Bloomington, IN’s The Bluebird Nightclub. Members of Songs: Ohia from various eras of the band will come in from all over the country to perform songs they individually recorded with Molina.
Also appearing will be Magnolia Electric Co. with special guests, Oneida, and The Coke Dares. Announced special guests include Swearing at Motorists, Bottomless Pit/Silkworm’s Andy Cohen and Tim Midget, members of Golden Boots, David Vandervelde, and others. A $5 donation is all that’s asked for admission.
Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Band of Horses offered their own tribute to Molina with a cover of “I’ve Been Riding With the Ghost”, off 2003’s Magnolia Electric Co.
