Yesterday, we learned of the existence of the Daft Punk condom, and everyone was happy. There’s just a small problem: Durex, the professional condom makers supposedly behind the Daft Punk condom, have denied involvement.
In a statement to Mixmag, Durex said: “The makers of Durex are aware of reports that Durex has launched Daft Punk branded condoms following their hit single Get Lucky’. There is no Durex promotion or partnership with Daft Punk in the UK or any other markets and Durex are not posting free packs to the worlds top DJs as suggested.”
So, what’s the deal? As Mixmag points out, this could be the latest in a long line of pranks beautifully executed out by Diplo. The Mad Decent figure head previously fooled the Internet with his rider of absurd requests and a record club where members receive his ashes. Plus, he was the first DJ to post a picture of the Daft Punk condom on his Instagram.
FWIW: Durex still hopes you “Get Lucky”, telling Mixmag, “We do hope that by using Durex condoms the nation will continue to make sweet music together and have great sex.”
Update: As MTV points out, Sony Music Belgium shared a photo of the condoms last week with the caption, “Score a #getluckycondom from our #DaftPunk van at Leuven station right now! #rw13 @RockWerchter.” So maybe they are real? All I know is I’m glad my journalism degree is going to such good use.
