Kendrick Lamar’s verse on Big Sean’s “Control” wasn’t so much an attack as it was a call to action: Kendrick wants competition, not beef. Yet, some of his peers, perhaps looking to capitalize on that SEO, have fired back at Kendrick with various response tracks and freestyles. Most if not all have come from C-list rappers, like Papoose, Fred the Godson, and NBA player Iman Shumpert. But yesterday, Kendrick was dissed not once, but twice by New York rapper and ASAP Mob member ASAP Ferg.
Ferg took his first swipe at Kendrick in an interview with GQ published on Monday. “What’s a king to a lord?”, Ferg said in reference to Kendrick’s claim that he’s the new king of New York City hip-hop. (Ferg’s debut album is entitled Trap Lord.)
Later that night, Ferg appeared alongside the rest of ASAP Mob on Funkmaster Flex’s Hot 97 radio show. Flex asked ASAP Rocky about Kendrick’s verse, to which he responded, “Honestly, [Kendrick Lamar] is family. I think hip-hop need this shit… He said these are my niggas and I’m letting you know there’s competition.” Rocky was, of course, one of the rappers named checked by Kendrick on “Control” and previously collaborated with him on “Fucking Problems”.
However, during the freestyle portion of the show, Ferg appeared to go after Kendrick, referencing Sherane, the central character in Kendrick’s acclaimed album good kid, m.A.A.d city, as well as his label Top Dawg Entertainment and fellow Black Hippy members ScHoolboy Q and Jay Rock.
