Northern California singer-songwriter Chelsea Wolfe’s latest album, Pain Is Beauty, has proven to be a daunting and somewhat draining emotional roller coaster. First came the lithe and danceable “The Warden”, followed by the dark and gloomy “We Hit a Wall”, and now Wolfe’s unveiled perhaps the album’s most sweeping track, “The Waves Have Come”.

Clocking in at eight minutes, it’s an epic of slow-marching drums and jagged piano, with Wolfe’s evocative vocals sounding especially focused as she recounts a love affair amid some unnamed natural disaster. Equal parts disconcerting and comforting, the track’s like a hazy memory or half-remembered dream, further demonstrating Wolfe’s ability to tug at heart strings with true proficiency. Listen in below.

Pain Is Beauty is due out September 3rd via Sargent House.
