Hybrid electro-R&B artist Solana Rowe, a.k.a. SZA, caught our attention earlier this year with “Aftermath”, “Ice.Moon” and the rest of her sizzling S EP. Now, the up-and-comer is prepping her Z EP (see the pattern?) for a fall release, and she’s previewing it with not one, but two new singles: “Julia” and “Teen Spirit”.
Both tracks see SZA continuing to fine-tune her fresh, oft-difficult-to-categorize sound one that curiously mixes heavy hip-hop beats, synth-glam and slinky pop. “Julia” is an ’80s-influenced bouncy affair produced by longtime collaborator Felix Snow and Top Dawg Entertainment’s Dave Free. “Teen Spirit”, meanwhile, brings slow heat, curves and big-beat drops courtesy of Jay Z associate and teenage wunderkind producer, Wondagurl. Even without a neat little genre, here SZA sounds as assured and stacked as ever.
