Every band brings a little something different to the table with their contribution to the A.V. Club’s “Undercover” series. Some go for the truly off-kilter song choice, while others just throw in a little skin as incentive. Melvins, on the other hand, garnered the most rambunctious of crowds recently at Chicago’s sunny Humboldt Park with one simple, three-word phrase: “Free ice cream!”

Sure, the folks at the A.V. Club will say the inclusion of a Jeni’s ice cream truck as backdrop was serendipitous, but it makes the band’s rendition of Butthole Surfers’ “Graveyard” (complete with Buttholes bassist Jeff Pinkus) all that more sweet. The sight of a gaggle of children literally screaming their heads off for Bomb Pops and Choco Tacos as one of the preeminent punk bands generate a maelstrom of visceral noise mere inches away would be disappointing if were not so A) utterly hilarious and B) seemingly make the group shred that much harder. Take a lick of their manky chops below (via A.V. Club).

As previously reported, Melvins recently reunited with original drummer Mike Willard for a new album, Tres Cabrones, due out November 5th via Ipecac Recordings.
