People love music in Superchunk's video for "Me & You & Jackie Mittoo"

on August 19, 2013, 5:20pm

Superchunk’s latest album title, I Hate Music, isn’t as damning as it reads. As evidenced by the infectious “Me & You & Jackie Mittoo”, their new effort is more of a reminder to daydreamers that music isn’t always going to save your soul. In the song’s accompanying music video, director Phil Morrison (Junebug) sends a concurrent message, pairing surveillance footage with photos of people displaying their favorite LPs. Based on your overall musical obsession, one could interpret a few meanings: 1) Not nearly enough people appreciate Elvis Costello, 2) Morrison believes you can protect yourself from storms by hiding under vinyl sleeves (Editor’s Note: Not true), or, most likely, 3) Music may not change your life, but that doesn’t make it any less vital.

I Hate Music is due out tomorrow (August 20th) via Merge Records. Stream the 11-track album now at NPR and discover 10 songs that made them “hate music” here.
