With all the hubbub James Murphy has caused recently thanks to his David Bowie remix and relationship with Arcade Fire, it’s been easy to neglect the fact that other former LCD Soundsystem members are out doing work, too. Drummer Pat Mahoney, for instance, has released a new single from Museum of Love, his new project with The Juan MacLean’s Dennis McNany (aka Jee Day).
Unlike the New Wave of the duo’s previous single, “Down South”, new track “Monotronic” has a groove LCD fans may be more comfortable with. Repetitious and layered polyrhythms roll steadily on with little variation in the electronics, a beat befitting the title. McNany’s barometrical drone is a hazy compliment to Mahoney’s disenfranchised lyrics about “Our Nation with its fatal concentration of wealth and [love].” (Guessing on that last word, I’ll be honest.) Take a listen below.
Museum of Love’s debut album is due out early next year on Murphy’s DFA, and the label’s site promises that “Friends are stopping by to help.” ICYMI, The Juan MacLean recently collaborated with another ex-Soundsystemian, Nancy Whang, for “Feel Like Movin'”.
