Indie rock outfit Gringo Star return this week with their third album, Floating Out To See, via their own My Anxious Mouth Inc. label. You can currently stream it in full below.

If you notice this effort doesn’t sound like the Gringo Star of Count Yer Lucky Stars or All Y’all, that’s because, frankly, it isn’t. A lot has changed for the Atlanta-based group since their last release. Most noticeably, the quartet became a trio after co-writer/multi-instrumentalist Pete DeLorenzo left the band shortly into the recording process, leaving brothers Peter and Nick Furgiuele to handle most of the heavy lifting. “We always loved Pete D’s songs and we loved playing with him,” Nick says in a press release, “but I feel like there’s more continuity now than ever before. Despite going through three drummers in the past year, me, Peter and Chris [Kaufmann] are feeling super tight.”

While the manner of writing changed with DeLorenzo’s departure, the band had already decided to switch up their recording style. The band went completely DIY, forgoing the use of any professional producers, mixers, engineers, or even a formal studio. Instead, the Furgiuele brothers bought themselves the fanciest mic they could afford, and set about recording the album tracks one layer at a time in Peter’s basement practice space. “With the last two records,” Nick explains, “we’d just go into the studio for a couple weeks and crank it out. This time… [we] recorded everything in our leisure, which led to a lot more experimenting.”

That experimentation led to 13 tracks of what a press release calls “a psych-rock symphony to the cosmos.” Float off into the spaced-out sounds of Floating Out To See below.
