Pearl Jam is streaming its 10th studio album, Lightning Bolt, in full one week ahead of its release date (October 15th via Monkeywrench/Republic.) Take a listen at iTunes (make sure you open the artist page on iTunes).

The follow-up to 2009′s Backspacer was produced by longtime collaborator Brendan O’Brien. The band first began work on the album over two years ago, but the initial sessions were interrupted by time constraints and other obligations. As guitarist Mike McCready explained to Total Guitar, the time away from the studio helped the band fully realize the material:

“We finished seven songs two years ago and we had to take some time to figure out what we wanted to do. And write some more songs. So about four months ago we started up again with a brand new batch of songs to go along with those. “I think getting away from them and taking the time to do it, and discussing with (Brendan), having many meetings between ourselves about these things, yet keeping it fresh while we were recording it. “I think it’s helped. I think it’s going to be really cool record and I’m very excited about it. Every artist says that about their new thing but I feel like we’ve been through a long journey to get there and it was totally worth it.”

Musically, McCready said the album has a “Pink Floyd vibe to some of it, (and) there’s a punk rock edge to other stuff.” (Most notably in lead single “Mind Your Manners” and the title track.) “I would say as a cliché answer it’s kind of a logical extension of what Backspacer was. But I think there’s a little bit more experimental stuff going on.”

As for frontman Eddie Vedder, many of his lyrics are focused on the topic of mortality. He explained to Rolling Stone, “They say to write what you know. I think that’s maybe one thing that we all know [laughs]. It’s living while you’re alive, and living to the day you die, and being cognizant of the end, and you might lead a more appreciative life, if that’s part of your approach. ”
