malkmus Stephen Malkmus reconvenes with the Jicks for new album, tour

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks will return early next year with a new album, their first since 2011’s Mirror Traffic. According to Pitchfork, it’s titled Wig Out at Jagbags, — for those who don’t know, “Jagbag” is a team of endearment for us Chicagoans, meaning “jack-off or a blowhard,” as Malkmus explained. Several other awesome album titles were considered, including Morrissey’s Trainwrecked Daughter and New Yoga for Cleavage Hounds.

Recording took place in a Dutch farmhouse near Amsterdam, where Malkmus self-produced alongside longtime collaborator Remko Schouten. It marks the debut of new Jicks drummer Jake Morris, who’s replaced Janet Weiss, and also features vocal contributions from Fran Healy of Travis. (Malkmus lives full-time in Berlin and is next-door neighbors with Healy.)

Similar to Mirror Traffic, Wig Out at Jagbags will be a concise record, clocking in at 40 minutes. As Malkmus explained, “If you’re going to make jammy music, it has to be background-y to an extreme degree, as if it’s not trying to grab your attention. If I wanted to make something jammy now, I’d have to be totally zoned out into a haze, but for this album I made melodies that just get in your head a little more annoyingly, or pleasingly. It’s not coffee-shop music, though. I hate that.”

Malkmus and the Jicks will presumably preview their new album during their upcoming European tour, scheduled to span most of January. See the full docket below.
