As to be expected, Bruce Springsteen paid tribute to his longtime friend and mentor Pete Seeger during his concert in South Africa on Tuesday night. Springsteen — who recorded an album of Seeger songs in 2006 and performed alongside the folk legend at President Obama’s inauguration in 2010 — covered Seeger’s iconic protest song “We Shall Overcome”.
“I lost a great friend and a great hero last night, Pete Seeger,” Springsteen said prior to the performance. “He was a courageous freedom fighter. I took this song to heart and once you heard this song you were prepared to march into hell’s fire.”
