Last year, Los Angeles singer-songwriter Kelela made her debut with CUT 4 ME, a forward-thinking mixtape that straddled and reinvented the fine and blurry lines between pop, R&B, and dance music. Continuing on that same path of creative experimentation, she returns with a new song entitled “The High”, produced by Gifted & Blessed.
Here, euphoria is painted in shades of deep purple, black, and blue, an ominous sense of foreboding embodied in the track’s murky, lurking synths. During the simmering chorus, Kelela effortlessly flutters, “And I do anything for the high…” her airy vocals slowly fading as though she’s already losing herself mid-trip. Though the song is stark in its elements — it’s not much more than a minimalist, moody throbber — Kelela somehow is able to conjure an untouchable world and experience all her own. Check it out below.
