Late last year, I started asking friends and family and random homeless people, “Christ, why can’t rock ‘n’ roll just be fun anymore?” Few gave any solid answers, though one vagrant mumbled something that may or may not have been the meaning of life. Oh well. It doesn’t matter anymore because I’ve stumbled upon together PANGEA.
On Badillac, their recent third studio effort and Harvest Records debut, the Los Angeles trio of brats set loose a gaggle of party balloons and pop them one by one with crumpled beer cans. The album picks up where their sizzling “Snakedog” single left off, scuffing up enough Detroit rock ‘n’ roll to burn the remainder of the city down. Songs like “Alive”, “Does He Really Care”, “Depress”, and “Sick Shit” would peel the skin off Lester Bangs.
But it’s the catchy cadence of “River” that’s got me thinking, It’s time to wax up my shoes and turn the pit into a dancefloor. Vocalist and guitarist William Keegan squeezes out a lyrical hook (“Lookin’ at the river ’cause the river can run”) like Buddy Holly on an all-night speedball adventure. Or maybe it’s Del Shannon on distortion. But perhaps it’s just pure, unadulterated rock ‘n’ roll.
I’d like to think it’s the latter, and hell, I’m not even an optimist. Check it out below and see if you agree.
Something, huh? Check ’em out on tour now.
