Pussy Riot attacked by Russian police

on February 19, 2014, 11:57am

Yesterday, Nadya Tolokonnikova, Masha Alekhina, and other members of the feminist collective Pussy Riot were detained in Sochi, Russia, accused of theft. Though they were ultimately released without charges, the women were reportedly beaten during interrogation. Undeterred, Pussy Riot returned to the streets of Sochi Wednesday to protest Russian President Vladimir Putin and perform a song called “Putin Will Teach You to Love the Motherland”.

As The Guardian reports, Pussy Riot’s protest was interrupted by members of the Russian police force, reportedly of the Cossack militia, who attacked the women with whips and smashed one of their guitars. As you can see in the below video, several members of the collective fell to the ground and were left bloodied. The whole incident lasted five minutes and no one was arrested.
