Pussy Riot may soon become a Hollywood film

on February 10, 2014, 9:38am

Last week, Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alekhina were apparently dismissed from Pussy Riot following their appearance at Amnesty International’s concert in Brooklyn. Anonymous members of the feminist collective argued that their performances should always be “‘illegal’.. staged only in unpredictable locations and public places not designed for traditional entertainment.”

Needless to say, Pussy Riot probably won’t be happy by news that Tolokonnikova and Alekhina are currently “mulling” offers to turn their story into a Hollywood film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the women confirmed they’ve received “several offers” for film projects. When pressed for more details, Tolokonnikova joked that “It’s like Star Wars!”

Tolokonnikova and Alekhina were imprisoned in Russia Siberia for nearly two years after being found guilty of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred or hostility” stemming from a protest at Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral. Both women endured harsh living conditions in prison, though they remained steadfast in their defiance against Russian President Vladimir Putin. Since being released from prison late last year, they’ve called on prison reform and are currently touring the world to look at how prisons operate in other countries.
