Watch: Angel Olsen dances up a storm in video for “Hi-Five”

on February 03, 2014, 12:25pm

Angel Olsen’s forthcoming LP, Burn Your Fire for No Witness, marks a shift away from her folksy beginnings, as evidenced by the fuzzy “Forgiven/Forgotten” and the alt-country ballad “Hi-Five”. Olsen’s “new energy” is also prevalent in the new video for “Hi-Five”, which finds the once-reserved singer-songwriter busting a few sweet dance moves.

Directed by collaborator Zia Anger, the clip is actually an homage to the ’60s and ’70s telecasts “where female pop stars do choreographed performances in grandiose studios with sparkling, modern sets,” according to a press release. (Think Cher or Dusty Springfield). While Olsen proves to be a capable performer of the Twist, Anger notes the tribute has a much more subtle message:

“These (performances) were always so wild and psychedelic and humorous from afar. The more you watch them, the more wooden and awkward the performances become. There is a certain loneliness captured. The song ‘Hi-Five’ seems to contain the same sort of duality.”
