Listen: De La Soul’s new song “Vocabulary Spills”

on March 21, 2014, 11:25am

Earlier this month, De La Soul released “Dilla Plugged In”, a new track that paired reworked lines form 3 Feet High’s “Plug Tunin” with production fromJ Dilla. Today, the iconic trio unveils a similar track in “Vocabulary Spills”, which features reworked lines from Stakes Is High’s “The Bizness”. Like its predecessor, this latest track manages to create a sense of pure cohesion between the archived rhymes and unheard Dilla production. Specifically, Dilla’s beat of rattling drums and muted funk guitar help give lines like “I speak divine of God theories, no need to be high/Always exhale the facts cause I don’t inhale lye/lie” a little extra punch and heft.

“Dilla Plugged In” and “Vocabulary Spills” will be included on the Smell the D.A.I.S.Y. (Da Inner Soul of Yancy) mixtape, which features an assortment of unheard Dilla beats paired with new and reworked De La Soul verses. It’s due out Wednesday, March 26th.

Then, later this year, the trio will release Premiem Soul on the Rocks, a six-song EP featuring production from DJ Premier and Pete Rock, followed by their new studio album titled You’re Welcome.
