Listen: Jay Electronica pays homage to The Notorious B.I.G. with “In The System”

on March 10, 2014, 1:33pm

We haven’t heard much from Jay Electronica since he lent a verse to Big Sean’s “Control”, but today the reclusive emcee returns to pay homage to The Notorious B.I.G. (Yesterday marked the 17th anniversary of the rapper’s death.)

Electronica’s teamed with producer J. Period for “In the System”, a remix of Biggie’s Life After Death standout “Niggas Bleed”. Here, Period flips the track on its head, infusing the classical piano loop and thudding bass with random lyrical tidbits from Jay Z’s “What More Can I Say” and “I Just Wanna Love U”. The nostalgia-laden beat is the perfect accompaniment for Electronica, whose verse mixes references to classic Biggie lyrics with Biggie-esque wordplay about life on the streets. Listen in below (via HipHopDX).

“In The System” is part of a larger Biggie tribute from Period entitled #MARCH9REVISITED Remix Project, featuring a “non-stop collection of remixes over new and classic instrumentals” from Hov, Kendrick Lamar, Rick Ross, Meek Mill, 2 Chainz, Busta Rhymes, and more. Stream and/or download it here.
