Listen: Kim Deal’s new solo song “The Root”

on March 20, 2014, 1:00pm

When she’s not touring with The Breeders, Kim Deal has been steadily releasing 7-inch singles of solo recordings. Her latest, fourth installment in the series “The Root” b/w “Range On Castle” is a collaboration with Whispertown’s Morgan Nagler and will be released on April 1st.

The forthcoming single’s A-side “The Root” is a jangly, raucous mess of a track. The former Pixies bassist sings, “I’m happy for you / but I feel like crying,” over sloppy electric guitars, a laid-back bass line, and clanging drums. The song’s sparse, lo-fi sensibility includes a matching low-budget visual that finds Deal in a Dayton, Ohio parking lot mean mugging in front of a camera phone. Watch it below.

Preorders of the limited edition 7-inch are available on her website.
