CoSigned artist Solana Rowe, a.k.a. SZA, had a huge 2013. After signing with Top Dawg Entertainment, the alt-R&B songstress then teamed up with her fellow TDE associates for a string of promising collaborations. She joined Kendrick Lamar during live performances of “Swimming Pools” and “Poetic Justice”, appeared on ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron, revamped her song “Ice.Moon” with the help of Ab-Soul, and hopped on Isaiah Rashad’s own “Ronnie Drake”. SZA seems poised for another busy year, starting with the release of her debut album Z, due out April 8th.
Co-produced by Mac Miller, “Babylon” is our latest glimpse of this new release, a throbbing cut that sees SZA cozily floating in her neo-R&B comfort zone. Steamy, cavernous beats pound against her soulful, airy coo, a clashing of sonic elements that somehow sounds so enticing to the ear. SZA has a way of doing that — spotting the sweet common ground between opposing forces, reinventing the ordinary into the magical. We saw that on last year’s well-received S EP, and it looks as though we’ll see more of it on Z. Check out the track below via its equally dream-like video.
