Stream: Johnny Cash’s “lost” album Out Among the Stars

on March 24, 2014, 8:33am

Johnny Cash’s long-lost album Out Among the Stars is streaming in full one week ahead of its scheduled release (March 25th via Columbia/Legacy). Listen in below (via the Guardian).

Recorded between 1981 and 1984 in Nashville, the 11-track album pairs Cash with famed “countrypolitan” producer Billy Sherrill (Tammy Wynette and George Jones), who Columbia recruited to help revitalize Cash’s career following dwindling album sales. When the strategy didn’t pan out, Columbia dropped Cash, who stowed the master recordings away with other family artifacts and heirlooms until his son John Carter Cash uncovered them last year.

Nearly three decades later, the album has finally surfaced in its entirety and features collaborations with Waylon Jennings and Cash’s wife, June Carter Cash. Many of the songs, including “She Used to Love Me A Lot” and the Jennings-aided cover of Hank Snow’s “I’m Moving On”, mark some of the last bits of material the country legend ever recorded for the label.

Pre-orders for the album are ongoing.
