By now it’s no secret that when Arcade Fire comes through your town on their Reflektor tour, they’re probably going to pay homage to local musicians. In Minneapolis it was a Prince cover, Stevie Wonder’s “Uptight (Everything’s Alright)” in his home state of Michigan, Constantines in Toronto, and Devo in Ohio. Win Butler and co. certainly had the pick of the litter when they played Philadelphia on Monday night. Would it be a Hall & Oates classic? A hat-tip to The Roots? Perhaps some soul with Patti Labelle? Or something left field like Bloodhound Gang? No, instead the band went with what in retrospect was the only real option: Boyz II Men’s “Motownphilly”.
The bobbleheaded Reflektors opened the encore with a bit of Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” before the real AF took over for “Motownphilly”. If this little game of Arcade Fire covers was a competition between the cities, we’d say Philadelphia just took the lead by a landslide. Watch fan footage of the performance below.
