Watch: Melissa Etheridge and Diarrhea Planet cover Tom Petty. Yes, really.

This year’s SXSW has brought some marquee live collaborations, like Jay Z and Kanye West’s Watch The Throne reunion and Blondie’s Debbie Harry dropping by a Dum Dum Girls set. But none of those team ups can hold a candle to when Melissa Etheridge joined Nashville punk outfit Diarrhea Planet on the same stage.

At Thursday’s annual Jumpstart Texas Day Party at The Sidebar, dreams we never realized we had came true as Etheridge and Diarrhea Planet stood with Austin punks The Midgetmen and members of the So So Glos to cover Tom Petty’s “Refugee”. Not only do they deliver an awesome, rowdy rendition of the 1980 single, but it’s totally worth it just to hear Etheridge riff on Diarrhea Planet’s notorious band name. Later in the evening, Diarrhea Planet took the stage by themselves at the Sailor Jerry House’s Black Bell Records Black Out Ball. There they took on another cover, this time of the most punk rap song there is, the Beastie Boys’ “Fight For Your Right (To Party)”. Check out the raucous performance below.
