The Pains of Being Pure at Heart return today with the video for “Simple and Sure”, the lead single of their upcoming third studio album Days of Abandon. Directed by BANGS, the black-and-white clip is like an art school hybrid of The Big Chill and Clue the movie, depicting some stuffy dinner party circa 19 ought six. Only instead of melodramatic reunions or the comedic stylings of Tim Curry, there’s lots of real-life GIFs, fake fighting, foxtrotting, and some mystery with a brick wall. Throw in a keg and some Puppy Chow, and it sounds like our kind of party.
Of the video’s theme, frontman Kip Berman told NYLON, “I’m taken aback at how many online outlets now reduce their content to a series of GIFs, assuming a minute long video or a single paragraph of text to be too burdensome. We’re as much prisoners of our need for constant distraction and instant sensation as the trapped guests at the dinner party.”
