Listen: Portishead’s Beth Gibbons covers Black Sabbath with stoner metal outfit Gonga

on April 24, 2014, 1:35pm

While we wait for Portishead to collectively “clear their schedules” and make time to record their new album, Beth Gibbons has kept busy by teasing a new solo LP and teaming up for the most unlikely collaborations. Case in point: here, Gibbons joins forces with stoner metal outfit Gonga for a cover of Black Sabbath’s “Black Sabbath” — appropriately re-titled “Black Sabbeth”, of course — replacing Ozzy’s signature growl with her own spectral vox.

As left-field as the track might seem, weirdly enough the two acts travel in the same circles; Portishead’s Geoff Barrow was an early supporter of Gonga, signing them to his Invada label back in 2003. Plus, the way Gibbons’ eerie presence fits in so frighteningly well amongst those devastating riffs, it makes me wonder whether she should consider a career in metal.
